My Experiment with Substack and Earning a Living #1
After months of writing on LinkedIn, I’m seeing if I can make this sustainable enough to dedicate myself to AI safety and policy full time.
I want to earn a living from Substack. Not in the sense of building a company or chasing growth, but in learning how to make it work.
The goal isn’t to be rich. The reason is simple. I want to learn how to do this properly, and to give up full-time work so I can focus all my effort on supporting AI safety and policy.
Several months ago, I started posting more often on LinkedIn writing about what I’ve been learning and what I understand. For the most part it has been well received. I’m now at 17,300 followers, which is staggering when I stop to think about it.
What I’ve noticed is how many people reach out for support. I love those conversations. They’re the best part of what I do. But with a full-time job, there simply isn’t enough time to give them the attention they deserve.
So I’ve decided to see if I’m capable of going all in. To find out whether I can earn a living from this work, and in doing so, create the space to keep learning and writing in this field. More importantly, it will let me support people and organisations through the knowledge and experience I’ve built over the years.
Over the next days, weeks and months, I’ll keep posting about what I’m learning from this journey. With a bit of luck, it might help others who are thinking about doing the same.
