For the past three years, the frontier AI race looked like a genuine contest. Multiple horses. Different strategies. Different values. The outcome genuinely uncertain.

That changed on Friday 27 February 2026.

In the space of a single working day, Sam Altman’s OpenAI announced the Pentagon deal and closed $110 billion from Amazon, Nvidia and SoftBank. The largest private funding round in history. A $730 billion valuation before the money landed. By the time markets closed, OpenAI had pulled so far ahead of the field that calling this a race feels generous.

To understand how one company lapped the field in a single day you need to understand what the other horses were doing while Altman was building.
